Save the date - Proton e:MAS EV debut set for August 2

KUALA LUMPUR: After giving a sneak peek of its upcoming electric vehicle lineup last week, Proton has now unveiled a new teaser announcing a major reveal set for this Friday, August 2, 2024.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will the first Proton e:MAS EV reveal?

As per the latest teaser, Proton is likely to reveal the first e:MAS EV on August 2, 2024.
  • What vehicles are likely to be included in the Proton e:MAS electric lineup?

The Proton e:MAS electric lineup is likely to include three EVs - a sedan, an SUV, and a hatchback.
  • The latest teaser features a darkened image of the first Proton e:MAS EV which confirms that it will be a rebadged version of the Geely Galaxy E5. The Galaxy E5 is a C-segment SUV based on Geely’s Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) platform that can also be found under the Malaysia-bound Zeekr 001.

The Geely Galaxy E5 measures 4,615 mm in length, 1,901 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height and spans a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. Compared to the Proton X70, it is 96 mm longer, 70 mm wider, and 24 mm taller and has an 80 mm longer wheelbase.

The Chinese-spec Galaxy E5 is equipped with a front-mounted electric motor that produces up to 218 PS and 320 Nm of peak torque. It comes in two battery options - a 49.52 kWh unit with a range of up to 440 km and a 60.22 kWh unit with a range of up to 530 km.

In terms of features, the Chinese electric SUV is packed with all-around LED lighting, a 15.4-inch infotainment unit, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, a panoramic roof, a 16-speaker 1,000-watt Flyme Sound system, and other advanced creature comforts.

Speaking of the price point, Geely retails the Galaxy E5 at a price ranging from CNY 123,000 (RM 78k) to CNY 157,000 (RM 100k).

For starters, Proton officially launched its new electric brand, e:MAS, last month. As per the automaker, the acronym stands for Electrifying Malaysia, combining the 'e' symbol indicating EVs and the MAS abbreviation that signifies Malaysia.

The distribution of Proton e:MAS EVs will be taken care of by the brand’s subsidiary, Pro-Net, which also retails smart EVs in Malaysia. After the successful launch of the smart #1 and smart #3, Pro-Net is ready to drive the success of the e.MAS brand by leveraging its extensive networks, digital platforms, and expert personnel to surpass the achievements of the smart models in the local electric market.
