KEY TAKEAWAYS
What is the Hilux GR Sport Wide Tread?
It's a wide body Hilux with a more potent engine but also with significant enhancements aimed at amplifying the pickup truck's ruggedness and visual appeal. Is the suspension the same as the regular or GR Hilux?
The suspension system has been meticulously refined with retuned front coil springs, a heftier front stabiliser bar, reinforced front wishbones, additional chassis welding. This latest iteration surpasses its predecessor in Thailand not only with a more potent engine but also with significant enhancements aimed at amplifying the pickup truck's ruggedness and visual appeal.
Nestled under the hood, the GR Sport Wide Tread retains the robust 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter inline-four turbodiesel engine, now enhanced to churn out 224 PS at 3,400 rpm and a torque of 550 Nm between 1,600 to 2,800 rpm, aligning its performance with the GR Sport variant found in Malaysia.
The engine benefits from an updated common rail direct fuel injection system operating at a heightened pressure of 275 MPa, up from 265 MPa, and includes a diesel particulate filter to meet Euro 5 emissions standards. Further refinements include a refreshed engine control unit (ECU) and bespoke tuning for both the engine and transmission, ensuring a more responsive and efficient drive.
Visually, the GR Sport Wide Tread draws inspiration from its Australian counterpart, featuring striking new bumpers and a front grille designed to command attention.
A widebody kit accentuates its muscular stance, with overfenders expanding the front and rear tracks by 140 mm and 155 mm, respectively, making room for robust 265/65 profile BF Goodrich AT tyres mounted on 17-inch wheels.
The vehicle also boasts a raised ground clearance of 37 mm, supported by newly integrated monotube dampers positioned away from the ladder-frame chassis for enhanced off-road capability.
The suspension system has been meticulously refined with retuned front coil springs, a heftier front stabiliser bar, reinforced front wishbones, additional chassis welding, rear disc brakes (replacing the previous drum setup), and enlarged front brake discs.
The dimensions of the GR Sport have expanded to 5,320 mm in length, 2,020 mm in width, 1,880 mm in height, with a wheelbase stretching to 3,085 mm. The alterations result in a broader front track and an elevated ground clearance, measuring at 217 mm, enhancing its commanding presence on the road.
The interior of the GR Sport Wide Tread welcomes occupants with a suite of modern amenities, including a new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The upgraded feature list continues with an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a wireless charging pad, and USB-C ports for the convenience of rear passengers. The cabin also flaunts a refreshed interior trim pattern, elevating the overall aesthetic.
Further augmenting its appeal are bi-beam LED headlamps, LED front fog lamps, premium suede/leather seat upholstery, and a GR Sport-branded steering wheel. Comfort and convenience are prioritized with dual-zone climate control, T-Connect telematics, a 360-degree camera, and keyless entry and start. Safety is paramount, with seven airbags, an array of passive safety systems, hill start assist, hill descent control, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and prevention, and rear cross traffic alert ensuring peace of mind for every journey.
While Malaysia enjoys the enhanced engine performance of the Hilux GR Sport, the version offered in Thailand—and previously, Australia—boasts an aggressive and rugged design that sets it apart. The question remains: would the Malaysian market welcome this bolder, more aggressive look for the Hilux GR Sport? or does UMW Toyota have the guts to bring it in?
