Rolls Royce Spectre undergoes second testing phase ahead of 2023 launch

KUALA LUMPUR: It is no secret that Rolls Royce’s first electric car, the Spectre, is in the works and will hit the roads in the last quarter of 2023. Well, ahead of that, the British automaker released an update on the EV’s development along with a new set of images.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will the Rolls Royce Spectre hit the roads?

The Rolls Royce Spectre will hit the roads in the last quarter of 2023.
  • How many kilometres of testing does the Rolls Royce Spectre still need?

The Rolls Royce Spectre still needs to complete one million kilometres of testing before clocking the 2.6 million km goal.
  • After completing cold-weather testing earlier this year, the second phase of the EV testing is currently underway on the French Riviera, where it completes 625,000 kilometres of testing.

Till now, the automaker has completed 2.5 million km of testing and achieved 40% development for the Spectre electric car. However, it still needs to run one million kilometres of testing before clocking the 2.6 million km goal.

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said, “Spectre unlocks the extraordinary potential of integrating a fully electric powertrain into our Architecture of Luxury platform. From this engineering starting point, our testing and refinement processes combine empirical data and human experience, intuition, and insights acquired over more than a century to refine the motor car's driving dynamics and character. In coordinating this orchestra of systems with precisely defined responses to driver inputs and road conditions, made possible by the latest software and hardware developments, Spectre delivers the Rolls-Royce experience in exceptionally high definition.”

A few details, which we know so far about the upcoming Rolls Royce Spectre include -

    • The Spectre is a two-door, four-seat, GT coupe that will be the first Rolls Royce car to feature the new Spirit of Ecstasy with a more dynamic stance
    • The EV will ride on the brand’s Architecture of Luxury platform that features an exceptional torsional rigidity
    • It also features a bespoke electric architecture, which can process much more data compared to the existing ICE-powered Rolls Royce models

    • The originally quoted drag coefficient of the Spectre is 0.26, however, the latest testing actually results in a slipperier 0.25, which makes it the brand’s most aerodynamic car ever
    • The EV also equips a newly developed suspension technology called, ‘Magic Carpet Ride', which is an electronic roll stabilisation system combining hardware components with the satellite navigation system
