RFID technology to be used for collecting toll from January
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) has announced the implementation of toll collection using radio frequency identification (RFID) across all 62 toll plazas on highways using the open-toll system, starting January 1, 2020.
The radio frequency identification mode of payment will be made available to the open toll plaza system for Class 1 vehicles. The new form of payment is all set to cater to the needs of an alternative means of electronic payment. The idea is implemented as a solution to ease traffic flow at toll plazas.
The Touch ‘n Go eWallet of a given user will be linked to their RFID stickers, with the feature of their refill via a smartphone app. Currently, the installation and usage of the RFID sticker, excluding the toll charges, is free. The adaptive measure looks forward to eliminating crowds by motorists who would previously have to stop and swipe their cards on the card reader.
“The RFID is the latest electronic mode made available in addition to the payments made through Touch ’n Go and SmartTAG cards,” said Works Minister Baru Bian in a statement.
Previously, trials for the implementation of Touch ‘n Go had been conducted for use amongst the common public. The number of users registered to use the system extended till over 830,000. The trial period was extended to allow the company to iron out some of the flaws of the system.
The advantages of implementing the RFID technology for the collection of tolls is to enable an efficient and smooth running traffic for the passing vehicles. Moreover, with the introduction of the RFID, the SmartTAG device will no longer be sold by any TNGSB authorised dealer.
