Renault to launch 10 new electric cars by 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Just like other auto giants, Renault is also ramping up its plans of introducing new battery-electric cars. The French automaker detailed its comprehensive EV strategy at the ‘Renault Eways Electropop’ event yesterday. The announcements made at the event were not only limited to the upcoming Renault cars but also included details about the automaker’s new platforms and new factories to be built.

Talking about the upcoming EVs first, the Renault Group aims to launch 10 new electric cars by 2025, seven of them will be for the Renault brand and three will be Alpine. The Group will bring the iconic Renault 5 with a modern and electric twist and also it will revive another iconic star currently named ‘4ever’.

“Ten new electric models will be conceived and up to one million electric vehicles will be manufactured by 2030, from cost-efficient urban vehicles to higher-end sports cars,” Renault CEO Luca de Meo stated.

With these upcoming models, the brand targets the greenest mix in the European market in 2025, with around 65% of electric and electrified cars in the sales mix and up to 90% BEVs vehicles mix in 2030.

Renault’s electric transition will be supported by two platforms - 

• CMF-EV from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance for the C and D segment vehicles
• CMF-BEV for smaller and more affordable vehicles like the Renault 5

As per the automaker, the CMF-EV offers enhanced driving pleasure with unparalleled performances thanks to its low centre of gravity and ideal weight distribution. It offers a range of up to 580 km on the WLTP testing cycle. On the contrary, the CMF-BEV platform is made for affordable BEVs. This brand-new architecture will reduce the vehicle cost by 33% and will offer up to 400 km in WLTP, Renault claims.

Further, the event detailed the “Renault ElectriCity” ecosystem which covers three facilities located in Douai, Maubeuge, and Ruitz. These units will be producing 400,000 electric cars annually by 2025. The automaker will manufacture the powertrains in its own MegaFactory in Normandy, batteries will be built in Envision AESC’s gigafactory while for the production of high-performance and sustainable batteries, the company has teamed up with a French start-up named Verkor.
