Recall update: Kia EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 5 called back for potential voltage fluctuation

KUALA LUMPUR: Hyundai US and Kia US have issued a recall notice for their respective and relatively new EVs, the EV6 and IONIQ 5. There is a voltage fluctuation when these EVs are parked.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Why is Hyundai IONOQ 5 and Kia EV6 recalled?

When the vehicle is off and the electronic shift lever is set on ‘Park,’ there occurs a voltage fluctuation; which in turn might momentarily disengage the parking pawl and lead to a potential rollaway.
  • Wondering how two different EVs have the issue? Well, that’s because the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6, and Genesis GV60 all share the same chassis, the Hyundai developed E-GMP.
The three automakers saved a lot of money on research & development; however, it does come with a cost. A small glitch in the shared resource might disrupt the beneficiaries, which has happened.

So, when the vehicle is off and the electronic shift lever is set on ‘Park,’ there occurs a voltage fluctuation. This disturbance in the fluctuation might impact the command signal from the Shifter Control Unit, which in turn might momentarily disengage the parking pawl and lead to a potential rollaway. Sounds scary, right?

Hyundai IONIQ 5 & Kia EV6: Recall solution

The solution lies with a software update through the official dealers. We wonder what happened to the ‘over-the-air’ updates that Kia and Hyundai have put up in the vehicles. However, until that happens, both the automakers have advised the customer to take precautions and follow the issued advice.

    What about Genesis GV60?

Since the GV60 also uses the same chassis as the EV6 and IONIQ 5, it might suffer from the same issue. However, since the car has not reached the customer's hand yet, the issue will be resolved at the dealer level before deliveries.

    What about Malaysia?

As for now, there is no word from Hyundai Malaysia. However, since the rollover incidents are not limited to the USA and have happened in South Korea, this is not an isolated problem.
