Proton replacing its CamPro engines with all-new GDI mills range!
Kuala Lumpur: Proton's next take for the betterment is on powertrain part. The company has decided to replace its CamPro and CamPro CFE engines with a range of all-new, naturally aspirated turbocharged 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre GDI mills, as revealed by Proton's chief technical officer, Abdul Rashid Musa.
However, the powertrain change is not implemented in the Proton vehicles yet! The work is in progress, for which the continuity will provide a better output as refurbished Proton cars by the year 2019 or 2018, at the earliest.
According to hearsay, a new turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine unit is going to power future variants of the Proton Perdana (based on the Petronas E01 family) replacing the 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre Honda-based engines that are currently in service to the vehicle. The 2016 Proton Perdana will be launched with this Honda based engine range only.

With changes appointed under the hood, the new Perdana is expected to get an official launch by 2018 or 2019. With the powertrain, the Proton Perdana will be able to churn out a total power output of 160 HP along with the peak torque of 250 Nm.
Earlier this year, when Proton started studying the possibility to improve driveability and fuel efficiency, the company found that the Belgium-based Punch Powertrain which supplies CVTs to all of Proton models failed to produce torque converter-type CVTs.

As a result, Proton started looking forward to use Japan-based Jatco for new torque converter-type CVT with the new lineup of engines mentioned above. Even, the Jatco had a booth erected at the Alami Proton event over the weekend to further hint for a potential tie-up between the two firms.
