Proton records 28.7 percent month-on-month growth in October 2021

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton has revealed its total sales figures for the month of October 2021. The Malaysia-based automaker has managed to sell 13,362 units in the last month, which includes the units meant for exports as well. This has resulted in a month-on-month increase of 28.7 percent, considering that the carmaker sold 11,392 units in September 2021.

In addition to this, Proton has recorded a total of 86,379 units in its year-to-date (YTD) sales between January 2021 to October 2021, as compared to 84,999 units sold in the same duration of ten months in 2020. This has led to an improvement of 1.6 percent in YTD sales. However, despite these improvements, the local market share of Proton has fallen from 21.3 percent in September 2021 to 20.5 percent in October 2021. As per YTD sales, the market share of Proton stands at 22.7 percent.

Among all of its models, the Saga was the highest-selling Proton in the month of October 2021, which recorded 5,107 units. In addition to these, the other two popular Proton models for the month were two of its SUVs – X50 and X70. While 3,839 units of the X50 were sold, 2,165 units of the X70 were delivered in October 2021.

The other models from Proton recorded low sales figures though, with 359 units of Exora C-segment MPV, 1,393 units of Iriz hatchback, and 497 units of Persona sedan. Proton says that the low sales figures of Iriz and Persona were due to the ongoing worldwide shortage of semiconductor chips.

Commenting on the impressive sales figures of Proton for the month of October 2021, Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar said that models like Saga, X50. and X70 were instrumental in its performance for the month due to strong demand for them. He expects that the market demand for all the models of Proton will remain high towards the end of 2021, which is why Proton is looking out for options to end 2021 on a high note. He also added that one of the reasons for increased customer demand was the extension of SST exemption till June 30, 2021.
