Proton presents Malaysian cultural handicrafts to Asian Games athletes

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton is an Official Vehicle Partner for the 19th Asian Games set to take place in Hangzhou, China from 23rd September to 8th October 2023. Ahead of the event, the Malaysian-born automaker extended its support for unity, sportsmanship, and Malaysian culture by presenting national athletes with Malaysian cultural handicrafts.

  • What Malaysian cultural handicrafts are presented to national athletes by Proton?

Proton presented a variety of Malaysian cultural handicrafts to national athletes, including beaded necklaces from Sabah, musical instruments from Sarawak, special fabric from Pahang, traditional clothing from Melaka, and unique pottery from Perak.
  • Held at Proton Centre of Excellence, the handover ceremony was attended by YB Hannah Yeoh, Minister of Youth and Sports.

Proton has been a part of Malaysia's history for 40 years. During this time, it has played an important role in developing the country's car industry and has contributed to various areas that have helped the country grow. This year, the automaker is getting involved with the 19th Asian Games by organizing the Proton Asian Games Nation Drive.

The initiative is all about showcasing Malaysia's cultural heritage and the company's products while embarking on a journey to collect handicrafts unique to the states visited. The group received handmade gifts from athletes like high jumper Farrell Glenn Felix Jurus, sprinter Patronella Lisong, boxer Daeloniel McDelon, and others. The gifts include -

    • Beaded necklaces from Sabah
    • Musical instruments from Sarawak
    • Special fabric from Pahang
    • Traditional clothing from Melaka
    • Unique pottery from Perak.

“As Geely is one of the presenting sponsors of the 19th Asian Games, PROTON’s involvement is not only part of our effort to support our national athletes competing at the games but also for the work undertaken by our joint venture partner. The Malaysian contingent will be competing hard to win but they are also ambassadors for the country, so it is apt for them to present handicrafts from Malaysia to the Asian Games Museum in Hangzhou."

“PROTON’s involvement with sporting events is symbolic of our drive for quality and excellence in our products. The efforts of the athletes to train and achieve peak performance mirrors our processes to ensure vehicles delivered to our valued customers meet the highest standards and as such, the company is thankful for the opportunity to be associated with such an important sporting event,” said Roslan Abdullah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.
