Proton Persona Executive CVT vs Perodua Bezza AV Automatic

Proton and Perodua’s never-ending battle continues in the sedan segment. Since both these brands are indigenous, they tend to have an upper hand when compared to the others in many aspects. However, when they go against each other, the competition is very interesting to watch and sometimes there are differences as thin as a hairline.
This time around, we have two sedans in question. First is Proton’s Persona Executive CVT, which got its most recent updated sometime in Q2 of 2019. And second, we have Perodua Bezza AV AT, which was in the news during the starting of 2020 regarding its new and refreshed model. So, wouldn’t it be a good idea to compare them?
Dimensions
The Persona is clearly bigger than the Bezza in all its dimensions - length, width, and height. It also has a longer wheelbase than that of the Bezza which should provide better cabin space. However, the boot space of both cars is identical. While the Persona does have an advantage in terms of dimensions, being the bigger car here, it is also the heavier.
Exterior
Proton updated the Persona in 2019 whereas the Bezza has received its latest update earlier in January 2020. The Persona continues to impress us with its prominent front end that features a pair of large headlamps, LED daytime running lights, and sporty front bumper. Somehow, the overall proportions of the Persona appear to be in place. However, its rear might not be appealing to everyone because of the weird taillight design. But we do like its spoiler.
On the other hand, the new Perodua Bezza gets a revamped front end with LED headlights but is still missing LED DRLs and we don’t know why. It has a sporty front bumper as well. Perhaps, it is the size of the wheels that spoil the side view of the car whereas the rear end is very much similar to the previous model.
Interior
Proton worked hard to improve the interior of the Persona and it clearly shows in the latest model. We found the cabin to be more organized and better finished. Also, features like 7-in touchscreen with Geely Smart Ecosystem (GKUI), voice commands, audio controls mounted on the steering wheel, etc. were quite welcoming. Bezza, on the other hand, has an impressive cabin space and feels more luxurious than the Persona. Also, the fit, finish and material quality are on par with rivals in the segment.
Engine
Proton Persona specs list a larger displacement 1.6-litre engine and thus it has more power and torque than the 1.3-litre engine listed in the Perodua Bezza specs sheet. As for the transmission, you wouldn’t have to worry about the gear shifts in either of the cars.
Safety
Although both the cars here have received a 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, Perodua Bezza has an advantage over the Persona in terms of safety as it comes with Perodua’s own safety package called Advanced Safety Assist (A.S.A) 2.0. Under this comes four useful safety features - pre-collision warning, pre-collision braking, front departure alert, and pedal misoperation control. When it comes to the basic safety features - like ABS, EBD, traction control, stability control - both the cars come equipped with all of that.
Price and Conclusion
The difference between the Persona Executive CVT price and Bezza AV AT price is marginal. So it all comes down to the buyer’s requirements. For example, if more power and performance is important for you, the Persona is the better option. But if you would like to have advanced safety features, the Bezza is the one you should consider.
