Proton Iriz: Old vs New
One of the most popular Proton models, the Iriz has been on sale in the Malay market since 2014. It holds a significant place in the B-segment hatchback category with an optimal combination that keeps its owners satisfied and happy. Recently, the hatch received a facelift consisting of notable design enhancements, new tech features, and convenience bits, which can surely give a tough run to its competitors.
Unlike before, the new Iriz is offered in three variants - 1.3 Standard, 1.6 Executive, and 1.6 Active at a starting price of RM 40,300. Let’s get into the details and know what are the differences between the new Iriz Active and the previous top-spec Premium trim.
What has changed on the outside?
Compared to the model revealed in 2019, the new one looks more stylish, sportier, and upmarket. It has a different grille on the front with Infinite Weave pattern and Proton’s latest round logo. There is also a redesigned front bumper and new all-around body mouldings that run all across from it to wheel arches, side sills, and the rear bumper. The new hatchback also features stylish LED headlamps with auto on/off and follow me home functions. Also part of the kit is a black roof and silver roof rails.
Over the sides, there are new dual-tone 16-inch alloy wheels. while at the back, new rear combination lamps elevate the car’s modern stance.
Speaking of the 2022 Iriz colour options, the palette now has two new hues viz. Citric Orange and Passion Red along with previously available Ruby Red, Snow White, Ocean Blue, Armour Silver, and Jet Grey.
What has changed on the inside?
The new Proton Iriz cabin now has a more modern look with new creature comforts. In place of the earlier 7-inch touchscreen display integrated into the dashboard, the 2022 model has a new 8-inch floating infotainment system. The new unit is mated to the Geely Key User Interface and an eSIM for online music streaming and navigation. With the “Hi Proton” voice control system, now you can also control the air-conditioning and driver’s window, which means extra convenience for the person sitting behind the wheel.
The new Iriz also has digital AC controls with a digital display flanked by two knurled knobs. It’s not an automatic AC, rather it is just a visual upgrade. Further, the new interior has red highlights all around, including red stitching on the steering wheel and red seat belts. The Active tag is positioned on the front seats, door trims, and carpet mats, Aluminium sport pedals are also there to spruce up the car’s sportier appeal.
Unlike the older Iriz, the latest version has a front armrest along with additional storage beneath. Also, the number of USB ports are now increased to 6, including 3 on the front, 2 on the back, and the last one placed behind the rear view mirror.
What has changed under the hood?
Under the hood configuration of the two versions remains the same. Both carry a 1.6-litre four-cylinder In-Line DOHC 16-Valve VVT engine generating a maximum power output of 109 PS at 5,750 rpm and a peak torque of 150 Nm at 4000 rpm. The motor is coupled with the continuously variable transmission that sends power to the car’s front wheels. This is the only gearbox option available with the hatchback now as the automaker ditched the manual one offered with the base trim earlier.
What’s new on the safety front?
The outgoing Iriz was fitted with two airbags as standard, but now there is a minimum of four airbags available with the entry-level model, although top-spec continues with 6 airbags. Other ongoing safety features include six airbags, an anti-lock braking system, an electronic brake distribution system, brake assist, electronic stability control, hill Hold Assist, traction Control System, two rear parking sensors, two front parking sensors, and a reverse camera.
To sum up, the 2022 Proton Iriz is one step up ahead of its predecessor in all the areas, be it the looks, features, comfort, performance, or safety. What do you think? Let us know your views in the comments.
