Other than Egypt, Proton’s assembly plants are located in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Pakistan. If we specifically talk about Egypt, the Malaysian automaker has been retailing its cars in the Land of Ra since 2004. To strengthen its foothold, Proton is now set to begin local assembly of the left-hand-drive Saga in the region next month.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim along with official Malaysian delegates and Proton management recently officiated the launch of the CKD Proton Assembly Plant in Egypt.
This initiative is part of Malaysia's efforts to foster a new approach to cooperation between countries. "Proton is not just an automotive company; it is a source of pride and part of Malaysia's identity," he said.
For the local assembly of vehicles in Egypt, Proton joined hands with Ezz Elsewedy Automotive Factories (ESAF), which is supported by a local distributor Ezz Elarab. The latter has been taking care of the brand for the last 20 years. During these decades, a total of 17,000 cars have been exported to the country, including an estimated 1,400 units in 2024.
Looking ahead, the Malaysian automaker aims to assemble and sell around 16,000 units of the sedan in Egypt in the next two years. The automaker also anticipates transforming Egypt into a significant hub for Proton vehicles in the region.
With this significant global expansion, Proton is expected to generate RM 570 million from the export of CKD packs to Egypt by 2026. An additional revenue of RM 20 million is projected from the export of parts.
The assembly of Proton vehicles in Egypt will also benefit the Egyptian economy as the country is anticipated to generate RM 180 million through duties and taxes.
Proton chairman Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar also expressed his thoughts during the event. "Our export sales are increasing every year. In our medium-term planning, we intend to make Egypt the main hub for Proton in the region," he said.
“The regional assembly centre in Giza, Egypt, would be the company's first foreign location for its left-hand drive (LHD) models,” he further added.
Closer to home, Proton sold a total of 6,112 units of the Saga in October 2024. The YTD has exceeded 60,178 units, making it the country's third-highest-selling vehicle. The sedan is likely to break the 70k mark for a second successive year.
