Porsche Boxster and Cayman Renamed with '718' Suffix
Kuala Lumpur: The Porsche Boxster and Porsche Cayman have been brought closer with an addition of 718 in the starting of their names. Now these Porsche models would be known as 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. This renaming would become effective with 2016 models as both of them have received a turbocharged flat-four engine as a part of their facelift along with some visual similarities. Talking about prices, the roadster would be rolled out with a price higher than its coupe sibling.
Porsche said in a statement that 718 models are successors of four-cylinder concept along with a history of distinguished Porsche sports car. Porsche has already integrated a 2.0-litre turbocharged V4 engine in its 919 Hybrid racer. The 718 Boxster also gets a 2.0-litre engine which is offered with two different power outputs of 261 hp and 311 hp along with torque outputs of 350 Nm and 400 Nm respectively. The former one completes a century sprint in 5.5 seconds while the latter one takes less than 5 seconds. The four-cylinder engines would help to reduce the kerb weight of the cars and as a result, its fuel efficiency and handling would improve.
The six-cylinder versions are reserved for more powerful models including GTS models and upcoming 718 Cayman or 718 Boxster Spyder. Apart from that, a hybrid 911 is also in the pipeline for the next-generation lineup. Porsche executive board member, Detlev von Platen said, “With more than 200,000 Porsche models delivered, we have reached a milestone of our strategy 2018 well ahead of schedule”. Further, the facelifts of these two Porsche sports cars would bring styling and interior tweaks along with some changes in chassis and suspension as well.
The launch date and pricing for these new 718s hasn't been confirmed, but we can expect it to make a debut in 2016.
