Polestar 3 performance SUV teased, debut in 2022
KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo-owned Swedish premium brand Polestar is set to end production of the Polestar 1 by the end of 2021. But, it will not remain with just the Polestar 2 in the lineup for long because the brand’s third electric vehicle is in making. Dubbed as the Polestar 3, the upcoming EV will be the company’s first electric SUV, which will be manufactured in the United States at the Volvo Cars production centre located in South Carolina.
“Polestar 3 will be built in America, for our American customers,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar’s Chief Executive Officer. “I remember the great response when I first shared Polestar’s vision here in the USA and I am proud that our first SUV will be manufactured in South Carolina. From now on, the USA is no longer an export market but a home market.”
The company describes the Polestar 3 as “an aerodynamic electric performance SUV,” which reminds us of the models like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Audi e-tron, and Tesla Model Y. It will not be built on the adapted ICE platform that underpins the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge. Instead, it will have a dedicated EV platform i.e. Volvo's upcoming Scalable Product Architecture 2, which will also underpin the new generation of the Volvo XC90.
In terms of design, the EV is likely to take inspiration from the Precept concept car, which the company showcased last year. While it was a long saloon with a fastback rear, designing cues can be adapted for a taller SUV format. This stands reasonable in the light of the Polestar Design Director Max Missoni statement, who earlier explained how the concept portrays strong hints about what to come for the brand.
Further, Polestar revealed that the upcoming performance SUV will feature “industry-leading connectivity features based on Google’s native Android Automotive OS infotainment system, as well as high-end, safety-focused autonomous driving features.”
Well, more information on the Polestar 3 is expected to roll out closer to its launch, which is expected to happen in 2022. So stay tuned with us.
