KUALA LUMPUR: Owned by Volvo, the Swedish EV carmaker Polestar introduced a heavily modified version of the Polestar 2 fastback model. Dubbed as the Polestar 2 Arctic Circle, the electric car is a one-off model that can tackle snow and ice with a raft of motorsport-inspired upgrades.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
How does Polestar 2 Arctic Circle tackle the icy roads at high speeds?
The Polestar 2 Arctic Circle handles the icy roads at high speeds with an increased ride height, studded winter tyres, racing wheels, and a reworked suspension system. It is developed by the brand’s chief chassis engineer Joakim Rydholm, who spends his leisure time racing rally cars.
Based on the Polestar 2 Long Range, the Polestar 2 Arctic Circle handles the icy roads at high speeds with
- ride height increased by 30 mm
- Custom studded 245/35R-19 winter tyres, each tyre features 490 0.16-inch metal studs
- 19-inch OZ Racing wheels
- Reworked suspension system with 30% softer spring rates and bespoke, 3-way-adjustable Ohlins dampers
- Front and rear strut braces
- Standard four-piston brake set-up
“I wanted to have more fun than usual with this car – really being able to push it in terms of performance and handling in a winter environment like a frozen lake,” Mr Rydholm said.
“The balance and predictability we have achieved with the raised ride height and specialised tyres are particularly noticeable when you enter a bend completely sideways, with a bigger-than-usual smile on your face, and in total control.”
Polestar has also increased the power and torque levels of the Arctic Circle. For the special version, the dual-motor setup delivers a maximum power output of 469 hp and a peak torque of 680 instead of the standard 408 hp and 650 Nm.
The EV maker also introduced a prototype launch control system with the Arctic Circle that gets activated via shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel.
When it comes to visual changes, the modified EV looks more aggressive as compared to the standard version. It gets LED rally spotlights, a carbon fiber skid plate, custom Recaro bucket seats, and lots of gold-coloured highlights here and there.
