Peugeot unveils the new 408 at the Bangkok International Motor Show
KUALA LUMPUR: The Bangkok International Motor Show has always been an exciting event for not only Thai car enthusiasts but for the whole ASEAN community. Just like the previous editions of the show, this year also several automakers around the globe offer a closer look at their latest models. One of them is the all-new Peugeot 408, which is a completely overhauled version of the previous-generation model.

The all-new Thai-spec Peugeot 408 is powered by a plug-in hybrid system comprising a 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor.Globally revealed in June last year, the next-gen Peugeot 408 boasts a liftback profile with a midsize car's footprint and an SUV-like seating position. It slots between the 508 sedan and the 308 hatchback in Peugeot’s global lineup.
Peugeot Thailand currently offers the new 408 in a single PHEV trim, priced at THB 2,790,000 (approximately equal to RM 361,478). It is equipped with a combination of 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor. Combinedly, the system churns out a maximum power of 225 PS and a peak torque of 360 Nm. The power is sent to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Also part of the PHEV setup is a 12.4-kWh battery that offers an all-electric range of 63 km on the WLTP cycle. As for charging, it takes one hour and 55 minutes when using a 7.4 kW AC socket.
Based on the Stellantis' EMP2 platform, the new Peugeot 408 measures 4,687 mm in length, 1478 mm in height, 1848 mm in width, and carries a 2787 mm long wheelbase. The boot capacity is measured at 536 litres (expandable to 1611 litres).
In terms of design, the latest French model features the hottest design trend with a sleek fastback silhouette, a bolder face, and a squared-off rear styling. Key inclusions are body-coloured grille flanked by ultra-slim LED headlights, a three-claw LED daytime running light signature, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
The interior houses a hi-tech i-Cockpit featuring a high-mounted digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch infotainment unit, a small steering wheel, and lots of other creature comforts.
So, now that the new Peugeot 408 has landed on Thai shores, we can expect the fastback to arrive soon in Malaysia as well.
