Perodua vs. Proton: March 2022 Sales

The fight between Malaysian-born automakers Perodua and Proton is not new to the industry, as the two brands have been fighting to become Malaysia’s No.1 car brand for a long time. Recently, the companies disclosed their March 2022 sales figures along with Q1 stats, and here we bring a comparison for you to know which has the edge over the other.

The above table shows that this time again, Perodua wins and continues to be the No.1 car brand in Malaysia. It sold a total of 26,759 vehicles last month, with a 9.5% increase from 24,433 units registered last year in March. Compared to February 2022, Perodua’s sales jumped by 53.2%.

In the first quarter of 2022, the automaker managed to sell 61,624 cars, with an increase of 6.4% from 57,909 units sold between Q1 2021. 

Proton ranked second in the above comparison, with 13,028 units sold in March 2022, marking a rise of 41.2% over the previous month. However, if we compare it with the units sold in March 2021, the number witnessed a drop of 13%. Quarter-wise, Proton sold 26,706 units in Q1 2022, which is 18.6% less compared to Q1 2021. It is important to note here that Proton sales numbers also include export figures.

Best-selling models

The best-selling Perodua and Proton models in March 2022 were the Myvi and Saga, respectively.

Yearly sales targets

Talking about Perodua first, the company foresees growth in the second quarter while sorting the production issues related to semiconductor chip supply and Covid-19. As things are improving, it continues to maintain a yearly sales target of 247,000 units.

Proton is also quite hopeful for the sales momentum in the coming months. It is closely working with vendors and dealers for a smooth supply of parts and delivery of cars. The company is also sorting its after-sales issues to serve the customers better. With these improvements, Proton aims to sell 150,000 vehicles in 2022.
