KUALA LUMPUR: Indeed, 2021 was a challenging year for the Malaysian automotive industry as it had to cope with various challenges like another wave of Covid-19, the semiconductor chip shortage, and the floods. Perodua aims to sell 247,800 cars in 2022, which is 37.5% higher than the 190,291 units sold last year. With this target, the automaker’s eye is on grabbing a 40.6% market share against its internal projected total industry volume (TIV) of 610,000 units. This is 10000 more than the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) target of 600,000 units projected earlier this month. It is to be noted that Perodua’s current market share stands at 37.5% and the industry sold 508,911 units in 2021.
On forecasting a higher TIV, Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad said that he sees the government’s measures for the Covid-19 pandemic are showing success, which makes him believe that another lockdown would not happen.
As for production, Dato’ Zainal stated, “For this year, we expect to produce 265,900 vehicles which is 37.5% higher compared to 193,400 vehicles produced in 2021.”
“The increase in production would result in the increase in locally-sourced automotive parts by 41.5% to RM 7.5 billion as compared with the RM 5.3 billion purchased in 2021. This recovery would help the industry heal faster as the demand for vehicles is still strong.”
Perodua sold a total of 190,291 vehicles in 2021, led by the Myvi with 47,525 units. It is followed by the Axia with 43,080 units and Bezza with 42,698 units. The Ativa, Aruz, and Alza contributed 26,847, 15,313, and 14,828 units, respectively.
The automaker also revealed that it has sold a total of 7,055 new Myvi units since its launch in November 2021. So far bookings of the updated hatchback are 31,154 units.
“Our order book for new vehicles is still quite healthy with the guarantee that the production will go uninterrupted will mean that we could fulfill the outstanding orders in a timely manner,” he said.
Further, he added that the ongoing sales tax exemption initiative of the government will help the consumers to purchase new cars.
In reference to the flood relief programme, Perodua’s boss confirmed that the company has received a total of 2,103 flood cases throughout the country so far. Of which, 366 vehicles have been repaired and returned to the respective owners.
Perodua Flood Assist Programme offers a 50% discount for standard parts, free labour service, and free 24-hour towing service via Perodua’s 1800-88-5555 hotline number. It is also accepting a RM 1,000 discount voucher announced by the Ministry of Finance, which has an expiry date of March 31, 2022.
