Perodua reports April 2021 sales figures; Ativa contributed 22%
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton kickstarted the second quarter of the year by selling a total of 15,017 cars in the first month and strengthened its second position in Malaysia’s automotive landscape. But what about the country’s top-selling brand Perodua? Well, it enjoys the top position with a total unit sales of 20,399 units last month. To this total tally, Perodua’s latest SUV Ativa contributed 4,624 units or 22.7%.
Back in March, the company sold 4,345 Ativas, which means it has delivered almost 9000 units of the SUV in just two months. In the official press release, the company also mentioned that its demand remains strong with an average of 290 bookings per day.
“We thank all Malaysians for their strong support,” said Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.
“The waiting period for the Ativa is currently between two and four months, depending on the desired colour and variant. We advise our valued customers to speak to our authorised sales advisors for accurate and up-to-date delivery times of the various variant-colour combinations of the Ativa,” he added.
Coming back to the total sales figure, it witnessed a fall in comparison to March sales when the company sold 24,431 units. According to Perodua, the main reason for the fall is the shortage of semiconductors that is currently affecting multiple industries globally. “The chip shortage is our top priority at present and we are deploying all our resources to deal with it, including working closely with the government and our business partners for viable solutions.”
However, the national automaker still managed to produce 20,278 cars in April, which pushed the year-to-date production to 80,661 units, confirmed Dato’ Zainal. Perodua’s year-to-date sales figure is 78,304 vehicles. Comparing this with the first four months of 2020, there is a boost of 74% as the first Movement Control Order hit the company’s stride in the last year.
Perodua targets for 2021
Perodua President also made a statement on the company sales target for this year. He stated a figure of 240,000 units as of now, which is 9% more than the 220,163 units sold in 2020. As far as the production is concerned, the company targets 272,000 units i.e. 23% more than 2020's 220,968 units.
For 2021, the company also expects a record purchase of RM 6.5 billion from locally-sourced components and 2.4 million service intakes.
