    Perodua’s unique Customer Study

The introduction of the Ativa Hybrid via subscription model is a two-pronged feasibility study that the automaker has undertaken for the following purposes -

    • To comprehend the group driving behaviour of a hybrid car in populated areas like Penang, Klang Valley, and Johor Bahru. 60% of Perodua sales come from these three major locations, with the Klang Valley alone accounting for 40%
    • To gauge consumers’ acceptance levels for a five-year car subscription service. It is to be noted that the automaker already offers subscription service to corporate customers under its EZ MOBi wing, rolled out last year in January

Back in August, Perodua outlined the Ativa Hybrid pilot programme and invited 300 customers to be a part of it. However, more than 600 individuals applied for the same, which is certainly a good start to the brand’s electrification journey.

During the event, five customers taking part in the project received their hybrid cars’ keys. Their names are as follows - Haliza Alias, Tan Chiew Woo, Sarina Mat Desa, Abdul Rahman Mohmad, and Farizul Abd Hamid. However, the remaining 295 applicants will be receiving their vehicles in the coming weeks, confirmed Perodua.

“The Perodua Ativa Hybrid would be the best vehicle for us to gain unique insights on Malaysian behaviour as a controlled group, as this data will be used to anticipate our customers’ needs when using an electric vehicle,” said Perodua president and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

On the car subscription model, he commented, “While we believe that vehicle ownership will still be our bread and butter; there is a possibility that a vehicle subscription business model may be acceptable for more users in the near future.

“This is what we mean by ‘subscription’ – a service where all other obligations of owning a vehicle – such as following a service schedule, paying vehicle insurance and paying road tax – will be managed entirely by us; all the customer has to do is pay a subscription fee to enjoy the package.”

Perodua Ativa Hybrid subscription terms & conditions

Customers who sign up for the Perodua Ativa Hybrid subscription need to pay an upfront amount of RM 2,150 with a monthly subscription fee of RM 500 for five years. Other charges like insurance, road tax, and maintenance will be borne by the company with a mileage cap of 100,000 km or 5 years. However, for wear-and-tear parts and fuel, owners will have to pay.

As these cars are meant for study, customers have to give their consent for location tracking via a GPS locator installed in the vehicle to study driving and usage patterns. Additionally, the drivers are required to submit regular reports (once every 3 months) on their road experiences as well as any technical difficulties they encounter.

After 5 years, customers need to return the allocated Ativa Hybrids to the automaker.

    Perodua Ativa Hybrid specifications

Coming to the vehicle under study, the allocated Perodua Ativa Hybrid is basically an imported Daihatsu Rocky Hybrid with just Perodua badges on the front, rear, and steering wheel of the car along with Ativa wordmarks.

For those who are not aware, Perodua is a part of the Toyota group and Daihatsu Motor is also owned by Toyota. The pure-ICE Ativa is also a rebadged version of the Toyota Raize or Daihatsu Rocky.

Under the bonnet of the rebadged hybrid model lies a combination of a 1.2-litre Atkinson-cycle three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine and an electric motor. The former delivers a maximum power output of 82 PS along with a peak torque of 105 Nm and acts as a generator for the 4.3Ah hybrid battery. The e-motor, on the other hand, makes 98 PS and 140 Nm and powers the wheels with the help of an HEV transaxle.

The Perodua Ativa Hybrid fuel consumption is rated at 31.3 kmpl (based on the Malaysian Driving Cycle test).
