KUALA LUMPUR: The year 2020 will be remembered for the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It affected common-man's life and business around the globe very hard. The automobile industry was one of them, seeing a drastic fall in sales. However, as an annual ritual, we got to know the top car seller of the year. For the year 2020, Japanese automaker Toyota scored first place by selling 9.528 million cars. It is to be noted that included in this figure are sales coming from the brand subsidiaries - Hino and Daihatsu.

It is for the first time in five years that the automaker became the top sales company. For the year 2019, Volkswagen sat on the throne, however, in 2020 the pandemic hit the German automaker harder than its Japanese counterpart. Compared to Toyota's sales figure, VW sold a total of 9.31 million cars.

Toyota in its official statement said, Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, which has been spreading since the beginning of 2020, Toyota was able to continue corporate activities through comprehensive implementation of various infection prevention measures, and by working together with partners including suppliers and dealers. In addition to these efforts, Toyota enjoys the support of customers around the world who favour Toyota vehicles, enabling Toyota to limit the decline in sales to just 10.5% year-on-year and maintain domestic production at the three million-unit level.”

Wondering which Toyota model sold the most in 2020?
The Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling model of 2020 with a total of 994,000 units finding a home. While North America is the Suv's primary market, the car sales increased by 37.9 percent in China.

Toyota also witnessed a 3 percent increase in the sales of electric vehicles with the sales primarily driven by the Chinese, European, and North American markets.

As per Toyota's analyst, Yoshiaki Kawano, the company will continue to enjoy strong sales in the Japanese and European markets. And the brand is expected to put a strong foot forward in the Chinese EV market.
