Nissan rolls out “X-in-1” approach to produce affordable EV powertrains

KUALA LUMPUR: Nissan has recently introduced a new approach to electrified powertrain development, supporting its long-term vision of rolling out 27 new electrified cars by 2030, The new approach is called the “X-in-1”, under which the brand’s core EV and e-POWER powertrain components will be shared and modularized to achieve a 30% reduction in development and manufacturing costs by 2026.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is Nissan's “X-in-1” approach?

Nissan's “X-in-1” approach aims at achieving a 30% reduction in development and manufacturing costs of EV powertrains by sharing and modularising core EV and e-POWER powertrain components.
  • What will be the other benefits of the approach?

Nissan's “X-in-1” approach will also offer other benefits like better driving performance, minimization in noise and vibration, and reduction in the use of heavy rare earth elements.

The automaker will be using a 3-in-1 powertrain that modularizes the motor, inverter, and reducer in EVs while its e-POWER vehicles will be utilising a 5-in-1 prototype, which further modularises the generator and increaser. Along with 3-in-1 and 5-in-1, the X-in-1 approach will comprise other possible variants of the mill to enable EV and e-POWER core components to be produced on the same line.

As mentioned above, the execution of the new approach will help the brand to reduce the cost as by sharing and modularising core components, the production efficiencies will improve and powertrain costs will reduce by 30% compared to 2019. With that, the company aims to achieve e-POWER price parity with ICE vehicles by around 2026.

Adding to the benefits are better driving performance and minimization in noise and vibration due to a reduction in the size and weight of the unit. The newly developed motor will also reduce the use of heavy rare earth elements to 1% or less of magnet weight. Also, the sharing of components and technology will result in an enjoyable driving experience unique to Nissan electric vehicles.

Senior Vice President Toshihiro Hirai, who leads powertrain & EV engineering development, said: “We make the most of our expertise and know-how from our more-than-a-decade long development and production of electrified technologies. Through our innovations in electrified powertrain development, we’ll continue to create new value for customers and deliver 100% motor-driven vehicles – EVs and e-POWER – as widely as possible.”
