Next-generation Ford Ranger extreme off-road testing underway

KUALA LUMPUR: The next-generation Ford Ranger has been making the headlines for quite some time now as the automaker continues revealing glimpses of the pickup’s testing and fine-tuning phase. The latest teaser video showcased the torture-testing of the new Ranger in a range of terrains and weather conditions.

Till now, the Blue Oval has tested the upgraded Ranger for around 10,000 km (6,213 miles) of desert driving. This is claimed as equivalent to 1,250,000 km (776,714 miles) of customer driving by the company. The pickup has also been tested off the beaten path for 625,000 km (388,357 miles), at maximum load capacity.

According to Ford’s Chief Program Engineer, John Willems, the pickup can cope up with the rigors of extreme tropical weather, tackle muddy bush tracks, tow over alpine passes, or endure temperatures of more than 50C. 

While the computer simulations and lab testing have played a crucial role in speeding up the development, there is no replacement for real-world testing to see how the vehicle stands up to years, Willems added.

As for the next-gen Ford Ranger engine specs, no official details are available. However, a few reports suggest a 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 making 330 hp or a 2.3-liter EcoBoost with 300 hp.

Earlier, Ford announced the new Ranger will debut later this fall with deliveries to be started from next year. But, the intensified teaser campaign hints that the world premiere of the revamped pickup is around the corner. The upcoming Ranger will share its nuts and bolts with the upcoming Volkswagen Amarok, and it will be sold in more than 180 markets.
