Next-gen Honda Civic Type R first teaser out, debut in 2022

KUALA LUMPUR: Since the introduction of the eleventh-generation Civic, auto-enthusiasts around the world are eagerly waiting for its performance versions - Civic Type R and  Civic Si. While there is no official update on the latter, the Japanese automaker just released the first look of the next-gen Civic Type R. Wrapped in full camouflage, the performance hatch hits the Nürburgring track for testing.

The teaser shots unveil a few things about the car’s design that include a large rear wing which has a flatter shape and is now positioned slightly higher on the boot lid. We can also see a unique triple-tailpipe exhaust setup on the rear and new ten-spoke black wheels paired with red brake calipers on the sides. The front fascia boasts a sportier honeycomb-mesh grille edged by slim LED headlight clusters. Overall, the surfaces of the car seem smoother in comparison to the predecessor model.

About the upcoming Honda Civic Type R mechanical specs, Honda remained tight-lipped. However, some of the reports suggest the car will be powered by the ongoing 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder mill with a bump in existing output levels of 306 hp and 400 Nm torque. A six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive are further likely to be the parts of the mix.

Just like the powertrain, no details are available for the interior part of the hot hatchback. Expectations include a new 9.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an updated digital instrument cluster, a fresh pair of sports seats, an updated sports steering wheel as well as an aluminum pedal box.

Honda will reveal the all-new Civic Type R in 2022 with production to happen in the U.S. for the first time. It will be produced at the same Indiana facility where the automaker is already manufacturing standard Civic hatchbacks.
