Next-gen Ford Ranger Raptor 2.0L bi-turbo diesel launched in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: SDAC (Sime Darby Auto Connexion) teased the arrival of the new Ford Ranger Raptor variant in Malaysia late last month. Well, here comes D-day when we have the all-new 2.0L bi-turbo diesel version of the performance-oriented pick-up truck in front of us. The new variant joins the existing 3.0L bi-turbo V6 petrol trim.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much does the Ford Ranger Raptor diesel variant cost?

The Ford Ranger Raptor 2.0L bi-turbo diesel variant is priced at RM 248,888 (on the road without insurance).
  • What powers the Ford Ranger Raptor diesel variant?

The Ford Ranger Raptor diesel variant is powered by a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-four-cylinder diesel unit that produces a maximum power of 210 PS and a peak torque of 500 Nm.
  • The next-gen Ford Ranger Raptor 2.0L bi-turbo diesel is priced at RM 248,888 (on the road without insurance). This is almost RM 11000 cheaper than the V6 model which retails for RM 259,888. The mentioned prices include a five-year, 160,000 km warranty against manufacturing defects.

Upon launching the new Ranger Raptor, Turse Zuhair, Managing Director of Sime Darby Auto ConneXion-Ford said, “As Asia Pacific’s only factory-built performance truck for high-speed off-roading, demand for the Ranger Raptor has exceeded expectations. Response to the Next-Gen Ranger Raptor has been great since we launched the V6 variant. Based on feedback received, we know many Malaysian customers want a choice of engines and the 2.0L Bi-Turbo Diesel engine is a great addition to our line-up.”

What makes the Ford Ranger Raptor 2.0L bi-turbo diesel version different from the 3.0L bi-turbo V6 petrol model?

As the name suggests, the key difference between the two models is the powertrain setup. The new pickup is powered by a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-four-cylinder diesel unit that produces a maximum power of 210 PS at 3,750 rpm and a peak torque of 500 Nm from 1,750 rpm to 2,000 rpm. The said engine is the same as the one available with the non-Raptor Ranger trims.

On the contrary, the petrol variant comes equipped with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 engine kicking out 397 PS at 5,650 rpm and 583 Nm at 3,500 rpm. Make note, this is the most powerful Ranger ever.

Coming back to the diesel model, it comprises the following key technical bits -

    • 10-speed automatic mated to an electronic shift-on-the-fly system; the available modes are - 4A, 2H, 4H and 4L modes
    • Electronically controlled rear axle LSD (petrol version comprises front and rear LSDs)
    • On-road drive modes - Normal, Sport and Slippery
    • Off-road modes - Rock, Crawl, Sand, Mud and Ruts, and Baja
    • Suspension setup includes - double wishbones with lightweight Fox 2.5-inch internal bypass dampers at the rear and a Watts linkage coil spring at the rear
    • 17-inch alloys wheels wrapped with 285/70R17 BF Goodrich all-terrain KO2 tyres

Visually, the diesel Ranger Raptor sets itself apart from the petrol sibling with a sole exhaust pipe at the rear whereas we find dual exhaust outlets on the latter.

The features kit remains the same with the following key inclusions -

    • 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster
    • 12-inch touchscreen infotainment display mated to Ford’s Sync 4A software
    • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
    • Leather upholstery
    • Magnesium paddle shifters
    • 8-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system
    • Wireless charging pad
    • Autonomous emergency braking
    • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functions
    • Lane centering
    • Blind-spot monitor
    • Reverse brake assist
    • Evasive steer assist
    • Rear cross-traffic alert
    • 360-degree surround monitor

Colour options available for the new variant are - Code Orange, Absolute Black, Arctic White, Blue Lightning and Conquer Grey.
