Mitsubishi Triton - Variants Explained

Mitsubishi Triton - Variants Explained

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia kick-started the year with the launch of 2019 Triton. The model was first previewed at the 2018 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) followed by its launch in Thailand.

Changes to the exterior styling are notable, though the pick-up carries over most of the interior elements from the previous model. A new variant, named ‘Quest’ has recently been added to the Triton line-up which varies a tad from the 4x2 and 4x4 versions.

Considering the variety of options in each segment, choosing the right model is quite a task. Moreover, every model has several variants in its range that magnifies the confusion. To help you with picking the most suitable option in the Triton line-up we bring you a quick look into the 4x2 and 4x4 variants along with their spec and pricing details.

Mitsubishi Triton engine specifications

  • The 2.4-litre MIVEC turbo diesel DI-D Common Rail VGT Intercooler makes top power of 181PS at 3,500 rpm and 430 Nm torque at 2,500 rpm.
  • Only the Adventure X variant equips Super Select 4WD-II drivetrain, while the rest of the grades get the easy select 4WD.
  • Power on the Quest MT 4x2 is sourced by a 2.5-litre DI-D Common Rail Turbocharged unit good for 110PS at 4,000 rpm against 200 Nm torque at 2,000rpm.
  • Mitsubishi Triton Quest is the only 4x2 variant in the carline.

Next in the range is the Triton VGT AT Premium. It gets halogen (projector) headlamps and halogen daytime running lights at front. Fog lamps are present at both ends; door handles, ORVMs and rear step bumper are finished in chrome. The outside mirrors can be adjusted and folded electrically. This variant also gets the large 18-inch dual-tone alloy units.

It is essentially the manual version of the Premium variant with a minor difference in terms of features.

  • Priced at RM 112,500, the price difference between automatic and manual Premium variants is around RM 8,500.
  • It is linked to a six-speed manual unit supported by the easy select 4WD system.
  • Unlike the Adventure X and Premium AT, the Premium MT grade features 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.

Mitsubishi Triton VGT AT

The Triton VGT AT comes bereft of daytime running lights, front fog lamps, chrome finished door handles and side steps on the outside.

  • It misses out on push-start ignition and the touchscreen unit have been left out, instead, it gets a 2-DIN audio system with CD player, MP3 player and USB port.
  • There is no smartphone storage, and rear lacks ac vents as well as USB power sockets.
  • The 3-spoke steering wheel sports a urethane covering.
  • Cruise control and auto door lock have been left out too; besides it gets fabric upholstery.

The standard safety suite consists of following features.

  • ABS with EBD
  • Brake assist
  • Brake override system
  • Active stability control-
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Traction control.

The seat belt reminder comes with driver’s seat only. Prominent bits like the rear camera and hill descent control are missing.

Mitsubishi Triton  M/T

The six-speed manual unit is the only feature that separates it from the VGT AT variant. This narrows the Mitsubishi Triton price for the base trim (4x4 range) to RM 100,200 only.

Mitsubishi Triton Quest M/T 4x2

The only 4x2 variant in the pick-up’s range is the recently launched Quest. Speaking of styling, the face sports halogen (projector) headlamps, colour key front dynamic shield levelling, blacked-out door mirrors and outside door handles. The 15-inch alloy wheels don’t quite fit the large body size.

  • As for the cabin, there is a black-lit meter panel with multi-information display, day & night rearview mirror, 3-spoke urethane steering wheel with tilt & telescopic functions.
  •  Power windows come with driver’s side auto up and down with anti-pinch.
  • The manually adjustable seats are wrapped with simple fabric upholstery.

The safety kit gets following features as standard.

  • Anti-lock braking system
  • Electronic brakeforce distribution
  • Seatbelt reminder
  • Dual front airbags
  • Rear parking sensors
  • ISOFIX mounts and child lock protection.

Accredited to the best-in-class turning radius of 5.9m (for 4WD and 5.7m for the Quest variants) and largest bed in the low rider category, the Mitsubishi Triton is one of the best options in the segment. If you are looking for a fully loaded variant; Adventure X is the most suitable option.

The rest of the variants also benefit from the powerful 2.4-litre engine, save for the Quest 2WD which houses the 2.5-litre engine. While the new Quest has been launched recently, the 4x4 range was updated earlier this year followed by a couple of product enhancements just recently. Overall, Triton is a stylish low rider truck that offers the comfort of an SUV and ruggedness of a truck.
