MG Malaysia shocks with Cyberster unveil: Electric Roadster set to launch in Malaysia this year

KUALA LUMPUR: MG Malaysia continues to surprise with its latest moves. Alongside the recent preview of the MG5 and MG HS, which marks their expansion beyond just electric vehicles in Malaysia, MG5 Malaysia pulled off an unexpected reveal—the MG Cyberster, their all-electric sports car.

Although details on pricing and specifications were scarce, they did confirm that the Cyberster will be available in Malaysia, likely launching in the third quarter of the year, which is just around the corner. In neighbouring countries, the Cyberster is priced at approximately RM318k for the AWD variant in Thailand and RM489k in Indonesia, reflecting its position as a premium offering that pays homage to MG's legacy of crafting iconic roadsters, like the classic MG MGB.

The MG Cyberster, developed by the MG Advanced Design Centre in London, is built on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), which also underpins the MG 4 EV available in Malaysia. This electric roadster is a sight to behold, measuring 4,533 mm in length, 1,912 mm in width, and 1,328 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,689 mm.

Globally, buyers can opt for either a RWD or AWD configuration, with the latter powered by a dual-motor setup that delivers a potent 544 PS and 725 Nm of torque. This powertrain is supported by a 77 kWh battery pack, offering an impressive range of up to 580 km (on the CLTC cycle). The Cyberster's performance is nothing short of exhilarating, with a 0-100 km/h sprint achieved in just 3.2 seconds, solidifying its status as a high-performance electric vehicle.

Design-wise, the Cyberster stays true to the classic roadster proportions, boasting a long bonnet and a sleek, compact rear. The car's elegant silhouette is accentuated by subtle black plastic elements integrated into the deck. Standout exterior features include LED headlights with an automatic on-off function, LED daytime running lights, 'Scissor' style doors, an electronically folding fabric roof, 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, and LED rear lights with a high-mounted stop lamp. The electric folding door mirrors with integrated side turning lamps add a practical touch to its stylish design.

Inside, the Cyberster offers a modern and futuristic cabin, crafted with high-quality materials to ensure both comfort and luxury. The interior features a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an interactive multi-function digital display, Nappa leather and Alcantara seats, a 6-way adjustable driver seat with memory function, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a Bose sound system with 8 speakers. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning, intelligent smart access, V2L (Vehicle To Load) capability, i-Smart connectivity, and an electronic parking brake round out the impressive list of amenities.

Safety and driving comfort are paramount in the MG Cyberster, which comes equipped with advanced features such as an Autonomous Emergency Brake System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Emergency Lane-Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Warning, a Blind Spot Intelligent System, Hill Start Assist System, Intelligent High-beam Control, and an Emergency Stop Signal. This electric sports car is designed to not only thrill but also provide a safe and secure driving experience.
