Mercedes-Benz starts manufacturing the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe
KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-Benz, one of the biggest automotive brands in the world, has officially announced that the production of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has begun. The production is being carried out at the brand’s Sindelfingen facility. Notably, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe made its first appearance at this year’s Geneva Internation Motor Show.
After an agreement signed between Daimler and Works Council at Sindelfingen in 2014, Mercedes-AMG is ready to produce the third in-house sports car in form of the GT 4-Door Coupe. The earlier two sports cars produced are the SLS AMG and AMG GT.
Ergun Lumali, the chairman of the Works Council at Sindelfingen said, “With the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, Sindelfingen is totally living up to its role as the competence centre for upper-segment and luxury-class vehicles. It is an impressive vehicle produced by highly qualified and highly motivated colleagues. With our company agreement "Future Vision 2020+" we once again contributed to the safeguarding of employment at our site.”
Daimler is planning to invest EUR 1.5 billion in Germany’s Sindelfingen plant by 2020 to support the company’s Future Vision 2020+. The investment will be shared for the development of EQ electric brand at Sindelfingen as well. Additionally, around EUR 600 million more will be injected into research and development.
For unawares, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine that churns out a max power of 435 PS. The higher model, the GT 63, comes with a 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine, producing 585 PS of max power and 800 Nm of peak torque.
Moreover, there is a top-end model, the GT 63 S, which although gets the same engine as the GT 63 but produces more power and torque than the latter. The power and torque outputs for the GT 63 S are rated at 639 PS and 900 Nm respectively. All the three engines are mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox with AWD systems.
Michael Bauer, the plant manager of Sindelfingen said, “The production of the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé at the Mercedes-Benz plant Sindelfingen corroborates the importance and the flexibility of the location. Our team is highly motivated and excited to continue writing the GT-success story with their own experience. At the same time, the production start-up is an important component in the transformation plan agreed with the works council in 2014.”
The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe will hit the market sometime in October 2018.
