Meet Volvo’s new fully-electric premium MPV, the EM90
KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo has yanked the silks off its fully electric premium MPV, the EM90. The EV is based on the Sustainable Experience Architecture platform, which also underpins the Zeekr 009. The Volvo EM90 is now available for pre-orders in China at a starting price of RMB 818,000 (approximately equal to RM 527k).

Powertrain, range, and charging
The EV runs on a rear-mounted electric motor, which delivers a maximum power of 272 PS and a peak torque of 343 Nm, enabling it to hit the century sprint in 8.3 seconds. The motor is fed by a 116 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery offering a driving range of 738 km (on the CLTC cycle). The battery juices up from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes with DC charging.
The Volvo EM90 is equipped with a bi-directional charging feature, allowing it to serve as a power bank for charging other electric vehicles and appliances.
Dimensions
Against the measuring tape, the Volvo EM90 measures 5,206 mm in length, 2,024 mm in width, and 1,859 mm in height and spans a 3,205 mm-long wheelbase. The boot capacity is rated at 1.826 litres.
Exterior
Speaking about the design, the car features the brand’s iconic Thor’s Hammer headlights and an illuminated logo that appears for the first time on a Volvo car. At the rear lies a lit-up wordmark and newly designed vertical tail lamps. Buyers can choose between 19-inch or 20-inch aero wheels. Additionally, they have the option to select from four exterior colour options inspired by the harmonious interplay between nature and light.
The EV is also equipped with a dual-chamber air suspension system and noise-reducing tyres, offering a smooth ride experience.
Interior
The 6-seater cabin of the new Volvo EV boasts a floating type digital instrument cluster and a floating 15.4-inch infotainment unit, both powered by the Snapdragon Cockpit featuring 5G connectivity and a digital voice assistant. A ceiling-mounted 15.6-inch screen is also available for rear passengers, which supports a wide variety of third-party apps and mobile screen projection.
Other interior highlights include the Volvo Crystal gear selector, 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, lounge seats in the second row with heating and ventilation functions, dual sunroof, and ambient lighting.
Safety
In terms of safety, the EM90 is fitted with a broad suite of advanced driver assistance systems powered by advanced computing power and an all-around sensor set with high-definition cameras, surround view cameras, a millimetre wave radar, and ultrasonic radars. “It brings our 96 years of safety DNA and extensive knowledge based on real-world accident research into a new segment,” says Volvo.
The customer deliveries of the Volvo EM90 will begin in March 2024 in China.
