Meet Volvo P1800 Cyan, a reinterpretation of a 60's sports car
KUALA LUMPUR: Cyan Racing, three-time World Touring Car champions, has revealed the Volvo P1800 Cyan. It's the same beautiful blue car you see in the images here. Well, as can be noticed, it is an interpretation of the iconic Volvo sports car from the sixties. It is built by the team of engineers behind the Volvo C30 Polestar Concept Prototype and the first world title-winning Volvo race car. And while creating the Volvo P1800 Cyan, the team decided to treat the yesteryears' design and engineering with care, moving it forward in a delicate way.
Mattias Evensson, Project Manager and Head of Engineering at Cyan Racing, said, "We decided to apply our expertise in engine, aero and chassis design for a car that delivers on the Cyan engineering philosophy in terms of predictability and intuitive driver control, yet keeping the light-weight, analogue driving experience of the sixties."
The car features no driver aids that, in a way, distort the driving experience, so no ABS, stability control, or brake booster. Its body has also been moulded to fit a wider track, repositioned greenhouse, larger wheels, and much more. The car has been refined and reinforced utilising carbon fibre and high-strength steel. Because as per Evensson, a solid body structure is the basis of intuitive and precise driving experience. The process has enabled the car to achieve high responsiveness and low weight (990 kg).
Powering the Volvo P1800 Cyan is the same 2.0-litre turbocharged mill used in the world title-winning Volvo S60 TCI race car. This unit churns out a maximum power of 420 hp and a peak torque of 455 Nm at 7,700 rpm. Though it is a turbocharged engine, it delivers linear power and torque curve and has the characteristic of a normally-aspirated power plant. In short, this mill offers the 60's driving experience with enhanced precision and performance. The mill is paired with a 5-speed bespoke Holinger gearbox that carries the same mechanical feelings as the original Volvo P1800; however, it comes with greater gear change precision and capability to handle higher torque.
