Meet the world's fastest production car
KUALA LUMPUR: Do you know the world's fastest production car? Well, if you think it's the Koenigsegg Agera RS then we'd like to inform you that we now have a new number one that has beat the Agera RS' record. Meet SSC Tuatara that in managed to archive a two-way average top speed of 455.3 kmph, Agera RS' managed to hit 446.97 back in 2017.
What's interesting is that this was SSC's third attempt to prove Tuatara's capability. When the company made the first announcement of Tuatara being the world's fastest production car, it faced plenty of controversies, ultimately leading the company CEO to pledge a re-run. The second attempt didn't work out either because of an engine issue.
According to Guinness World Records, all vehicles fighting to grab the 'world's fastest production car' title have to undergo two runs in opposite directions - the average of both the runs is then taken into account. In the first run, the car topped 450.1 kmph and in the latter, it hit 460.4 kmph.
On this achievement, Jerod Shelby said, “We took a different approach this time in accelerating the car to the higher speeds. Larry Caplin, who owns the car, used a ‘drag race’ style of acceleration during the record runs, pulling full throttle and boost for 40-50 seconds”. He further added, “Back in October, we were leaning into the speed much slower and used only about 20-25 seconds of full throttle and boost during the run. The difference is impressive both performance and operation wise. Larry pulled off a run that was far more difficult, at least by a factor of four, than what we attempted in Nevada."
For the first attempt, SSC chose to run on State Route 160, Las Vegas, Nevada. For the third attempt, however, the company decided to go to the Kennedy Space CEntre.
Assisting SSC to set the record was Racelogic USA provided technical assistance by measuring and validating the test runs. Racelogic VBOX 3i 100 Hz GNSS system was put to use for collecting speed and time data. Besides, the VBOX Video HD2 recorder was also put to use.
This time around the SSC Tuatara was not driven by a professional race driver (like Oliver Webb that was there in the first attempt) but by Larry Capin - the very first owner of SSC Tuatara.
