Meet the Renault R5 electric car concept, to enter production soon

KUALA LUMPUR: Renault has introduced a new electric car concept, that goes by the name R5. In the future it will be accompanied by a hot-hatch Alpine model.

Renault R5: Production version?

By the looks of it the Renault R5 seems like a peppy-performance oriented car, however, it’s not just something the company has created to forget. Renault has confirmed that the production version of R5 will arrive in less than three year. With the Zoe EV already on-board, the automaker has a lot of experience in the electric segment. But will the R5 replace the Zoe or will accompany it, is still a mystery.

Renault R5: Platform

The Renault R5 will set on the second-gen Renault-Nissan EV platform. It is the same base supporting the full-electric Megane arriving next year. Also, this platform utilises slim battery setup, so the R5 needs to be tall. In the Megan, we see a 217 hp motor and front-drive, with that in mind the R5 will surely get less. The said battery allows for a fast charge at up to 130 kW.

Renault R5: Price

Though we do not have the actual Renault R5 price figures, however it will be a good value for money car. With the R5, Renault is now able to make EVs for the same cost as the car’s powered by conventional fuels.

Renault R5: Design

On seeing the Renault R5 the first word that comes to mind was Gilles Vidal. Who, you ask? Well, Vidal is Renault’s new design director who is known for R5-like design themes. Earlier, when he worked for Peugeot, the e-Legend concept came out under his guidance.

Also, a lot of the design properties seem to be carried forward from the 70’s R5. For instance, the lighting units at front and rear, profile & rear pillar shape, flat surfaces, and wheels. With that being said, the R5 concept features super-modern design elements that in Vidal’s words are inspired by sport equipment and electric gadgets.

As for its interior layout, we have no images and details.
