Meet the production version of Toyota Copen GR Sport
KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota has unveiled the production version of Copen GR Sport, which was showcased as a concept at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon in January. The car is based on Daihatsu’s Copen, one of the brand’s cool minicars, and it has been developed in collaboration between Toyota Gazoo Racing and Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd.
Reportedly, the production version is the same as the concept, which means there are no changes done in the looks department. Also, it is the first sports car by Toyota Gazoo Racing in the “GR” series, and Daihatsu will manufacture it.
Explicitly, the development is emphasized on the suspension tuning and the body rigidity. Giving the car optimum body rigidity balance, a front brace is added, and the shape of the centre brace is also changed. To achieve a smooth ride, a unique shock absorber is also there.
Speaking of its look, at the front, there is a big lower grille enclosed with square fog lamps. There is a new front bumper, which is claimed to give improved aerodynamics. At the rear, there is a large black-colored bumper, which is integrated with a diffuser and two downward-facing exhaust tips. The car rides on 16-inch matte grey-colored BBS forged alloy wheels, and it also comes with the Copen’s Active Top folding metal roof. At the front, rear, and sides of Copen GR Sport, there are GR badges. Moreover, one can choose from eight exterior color options, and there are multiple options available for the roof as well.
Inside the car, there are GR badges on the leather-wrapped steering wheel and Recaro seats. There is an exclusive meter panel, which has a red needle, and the GR logo.
Copen GR Sport weighs around 907 kg. It is powered by a 0.66-litre turbocharged engine that churns out 64 PS of maximum power and 92 Nm of torque. The engine is paired either with a five-speed manual gearbox or a CVT.
As for now, the racy roadster is only available in Japan, and the price tag comes between 2.38 million yen (RM92,088) and 2.435 million yen (RM94,221) according to the transmission options.
