Meet Maserati's new spyder, the MC20 Cielo

Back in 2020, Maserati began a new era by introducing the MC20 supercar that conveys the special features of the brand in its very name. MC stands for Maserati Corse, and 20 refers to 2020. Well, now almost after two years, the spyder version of this stunning supercar, called the MC20 Cielo, is here. And, believe us, the open-top MC20 looks dead gorgeous with the butterfly doors. Let's dive deeper and check out its key highlights.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is unique about the MC20 Cielo glass roof?

The MC20 Cielo electrically-retractable glass roof opens or closes in 12 seconds and features an electrochromic functionality, enabling it to go from clear to opaque. It also offers best-in-class thermal insulation.
  • How fast is the Maserati MC20 Cielo?

The Maserati MC20 Cielo takes 3.0 seconds to complete the century sprint, which is 0.1 seconds longer than the standard model.
  • Innovative active glass roof

The word "Cielo" refers to "sky" in Italian, making it appropriate for the supercar. True to its name, the car offers you a clear view of the sky at the tap of a button. The electrically-retractable glass roof opens or closes in 12 seconds and features an electrochromic functionality, enabling it to go from clear to opaque, thanks to Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal technology. This can be done by tapping a finger on the option given on the central display. The roof also offers best-in-class thermal insulation and a multi-sensory driving experience.

    Subtle exterior revisions

The MC20 Cielo's exterior design is almost similar to the non-convertible version, with a few revisions made to hide the retractable glass roof. It includes the revised air intakes and hatch; the latter hinders the view of the mid-mounted engine, unlike the coupe. The alloy wheels also feature a new design.

    Acquamarina exterior shade

The new Acquamarina exterior paint is exclusively available for the Cielo. This new three-layer metallic colour is a part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customisation programme. It interacts with light and reveals itself in a surprising way. The base layer is pastel grey inspired by racing, accompanied by an aquamarine mica that spruces up the colour and makes it exceptional.

Weighs 65 kg more than the coupe

At 1540 kg, the Maserati MC20 weighs just 65 kg more than the regular coupe. Despite this slight increase in the weight, the car maintains the dynamic performance and driving pleasure, claims Maserati. The credit goes to the weight-to-power ratio and the carbon fibre chassis, which guarantees uncompromising torsional rigidity and offers great handling on the road and track.

    Same engine setup

The automaker has not made any changes on the mechanical front, which means the MC20 Cielo runs on the same mid-mounted 3.0-litre Nettuno twin-turbo V6 mill. It delivers a maximum power of 621 hp and a peak torque of 700 Nm, sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Slightly slower than the standard model

In terms of performance, the convertible MC20 takes 3.0 seconds to complete the century sprint, which is 0.1 seconds longer than the standard model. The top speed of the car is rated at 320 kmph.

    Vehicle height variator

The MC20 convertible car also has a vehicle height variator feature to raise it at low speeds for extra ground clearance. However, this comes as an option and works at speeds of up to 40 kmph.

    Familiar cabin

Getting inside, here also we see almost the same design and stuff. The electrically-adjustable steering system comes standard with the Cielo. This is accompanied by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment system paired with the Maserati Intelligent Assistant Multimedia system and Maserati Connect for an amazing in-car experience.

On the transmission tunnel lies the new touch-sensitive drive mode selector, gear buttons, window controls and infotainment volume control. Also, part of the kit is a wireless phone charger and a High Premium Sonus Faber audio system.

    New Active Safety Systems

The convertible supercar comes with a wide range of Active Safety Systems. Along with the parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring rear-view camera available on the coupe, the spyder also gets the traffic sign information, autonomous emergency brake, and a new 360° camera.

    PrimaSeries Launch Edition

Maserati will offer a special edition of the MC20 Cielo called PrimaSeries Launch Edition. It will be limited to just 60 units worldwide with exclusive paint, wheels, badges, and upholstery.

    100% Made in Italy

Like the coupe, the MC20 spyder is also developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab and manufactured at the Viale Ciro Menotti plant. That means it is 100% made in Italy and 100% made in Modena.
