Meet Ferrari SP48 Unica; the latest in the brand’s Special Projects cars series

KUALA LUMPUR: Wondering what Ferrari's series of Special Projects cars is? In Ferrari’s words, the project comprises “absolutely bespoke cars crafted to the specifications of a single client and designed as a clear expression of their own individual requirements”. Coming back to the Ferrari SP48 Unica, this beautiful red car was designed by the brand’s celebrated designer Flavio Manzoni and his team. Based on the Ferrari F8 Tributo, the very special version of the car is for an equally special customer who remains unnamed.

“The SP48 Unica achieves its goal of transforming an existing model to masterful effect,” says Ferrari. Here’s how?

A few key design highlights of the Ferrari F8 Tributo based SP48 Unica -

• There is no rear visibility, as the car doesn’t have a windscreen at the back
• The roof flows smoothly from the centre section into the pair of intakes set at the rear. Thus creating an arrow-like shape
• As Ferrari calls them, the ‘cooling flows’ are one of the biggest changes over the regular F8. They are present on the front bumper and beneath the rear spoiler

• The grilles have been optimised for maximum airflow
• Behind the side windows is present intercooler intake that ensures some fantastic noises are transmitted inside
• The overhangs are longer than the F8; it boosts rear downforce by reducing suction from the roof area
• One can also notice slight design changes on the headlight and boot vents

No images of the car’s interior are released. However, the car gets comfortable seats wrapped in special black Alcantara upholstery with red/orange fabric and polished sill covers.

Overall, the Ferrari has successfully created the notion that the Unica is made from a single metal block.
