McLaren launches 720S Spider; starts at RM 1.218 million
KUALA LUMPUR: The McLaren 720 Spider has been finally launched in Malaysia by McLaren Kuala Lumpur. The Super Series offering made its local launch 8 months post its global debut.
The 720S Spider is the convertible model of the 720S coupe. On the design front, it differs from the coupe model with its new buttresses, retractable hardtop, and powered rear window. The car underpins a Monocage II-S carbon-fibre structure - an advanced version of the Monocage II that rests under the coupe’s skin. The former doesn’t have a central spine running above the cabin.
The underfloor aerodynamics are now revised, thus making sure that the car is compatible with the fill-width active rear spoiler and new rear bodywork. The rear spoiler gets different mapping compared to the coupe version.
The hardtop is retractable and features one-piece, carbon-fibre roof panel. The electric folding mechanism allows the top to raise/lower in 11 seconds, i.e., 6 seconds quicker than the 650S Spider. Compared to the 650S where the roof was deployed at 30 kmph, here it can be done at 50 kmph. Also, it is much quieter in operation than the previous-gen Super Series convertible.
The McLaren Spider 720S is 49 kg heavier than the coupe, that is a dry weight of 1,322 kg. This additional weight is due to the tonneau system and new retractable hardtop. The company claims that the car is 88 kg lighter than the Ferrari 488 Spider, its closest competitor.
Powering the 720S Spider is a M840T 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 mill that churns out a maximum power of 720 PS along with a peak torque of 770 Nm. A 7-speed dual-clutch SSG transmission system sends power to the rear wheels. On the performance front, the car can cover 0 to 100 kmph sprint in 2.9 seconds and has a top speed of 341 kmph. The top speed reduces to 325 kmph when the roof is lowered.
The car stands on twin five-spoke lightweight alloy wheel 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch at the rear
The cabin is loaded with features like a centrally-mounted 8.0-inch high-resolution Central Infotainment Screen through which the driver can control audio, navigation, media, climate control, other convenience features.
The McLaren 720S Spider is offered in three variant options - Standard, Performance, and Luxury. The car is available in 23 exterior color options that include two new hues - Aztec Gold and Belize Blue.
