McLaren Artura hybrid teased; set for debut on February 16
KUALA LUMPUR: We already know that McLaren is working on a High-Performance Hybrid (HPH) supercar named ‘Artura’ as the first part of its road-going car division's transformation. According to the company’s boss, every element of the upcoming supercar is new, from the platform and hybrid engine to the interior design and the cutting edge driver interface.
Well, we do not have to wait much longer to find out this as the company has announced that it will reveal the all-new Artura supercar on February 16 at 7:01 p.m. EST, a few hours after Porsche’s 911 GT3 debut.
Along with this, McLaren also released a short teaser video of the electrified supercar telling us a few things about it. The model will debut in green colour and will have boomerang-shaped headlights, huge air-intakes, ultra-thin tail lights, and the brand’s trademarked dihedral doors. The shots of the digital gauge cluster reveal that it will have a 12-volt battery pack and a V6 engine with redlining close to 8,000 rpm.
Regarding mechanical bits, the company earlier said that it “retains the performance benefits of McLaren’s larger-capacity V8 engines and has the additional attraction of improved torque response at low-engine speeds to deliver scintillating acceleration” The all-electric range of the Artura is expected to be around 20 miles (32 km).
Speaking about the McLaren Artura underpinnings, it is based on the new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) platform, which the company designed exclusively for the hybrid powertrain. The supercar features various weight-saving technologies throughout the chassis, body, and powertrain to counter the weight of the hybrid system. McLaren claims that with MCLA at the heart, the Artura will have the class-leading weight advantage.
The McLaren Artura will replace the 570S in the automaker’s lineup while providing competition to the Lamborghini Huracan Performante and Ferrari F8 Tributo in the process. After the global reveal, it is likely to go on sale in the first half of 2021.
