Mazda Recalls its Vehicles Due to Faulty Takata Airbags
Kuala Lumpur: The latest automaker to join the recall league due to faulty Takata airbags is Japanese automaker Mazda. Although earlier in November 2015, Mazda announced that it would stop using Takata airbags in its new cars, this recalled batch is of the older ones. Known as one of the most detested scandals in this decade, Takata issue has affected over 374,000 Mazda cars due to faulty airbags. Earlier in 2015, seven other automakers were also affected by Takata scandal including Mercedes-Benz, Suzuki, Tesla, Land Rover, Volvo Trucks, Spartan Motors and Volkswagen Group.
Talking about the latest issue, the affected cars include Mazda6, MazdaSpeed6 and Mazda RX-8. The Affected Mazda6 are those which were built between 29th May 2002 to 5th May 2008, MazdaSpeed6 between 1st July 2005 to 29th June 2007 and Mazda RX-8 between 25th June 2003 to 30th June 2003. In Malaysia, only a few units of Mazda RX-8 were affected. The concerned owners were called by Bermaz Motors and the issue was rectified.
The inflators which were produced by Takata were on a high risk of explosion due to which the metal fragments hit the occupants and resulted in injuries and even death. Till now, 105 injuries and 9 deaths have been reported, out of which one was in Malaysia itself where a woman was killed by a faulty airbag inflator.
