Massive Recall with Increasing Numbers, Takata’s Faulty Air Inflator
KUALA LUMPUR: The recall is worldwide and the numbers are increasing. It is more than 50 million vehicles that are called back by the prestigious automakers just to fix the defective inflators that are made by the Japanese supplier, Takata Corporation. Indeed, it marks the biggest automotive recall on record.
The inflators produced by Takata are susceptible to moisture exposure due to which the risk of its explosion increases, showering the occupants with metal shards. Reporting 105 injuries due to this fault, there were also six deaths in the Honda cars including five in the USA and one in Malaysia.
Honda's 34 million vehicles have been recalled from USA, and in Japan the recall targets several models manufactured between years 2002 to 2008. More recalls will be announced from other regions as well although it is not yet clear that Europe is included in these regions or not.
With no doubts on the fact that this recall has hit a lot of auto giants but Honda is seen to be majorly affected as the car recall tally from Japan counts at 3,38,728 along with other look alike numbers from other locations of the world. The faulty driver side and passenger side inflators are being replaced as soon as possible with Honda authorities reporting that currently they are sourcing from companies that can supply quick replacement.
Today, the recall figure stands as 19.6 million vehicles worldwide and 9.9 million in the United States. After today, the numbers may rise further but concern is increasing for sure.
