Maserati’s first electric car teased, debut may happen this year

KUALA LUMPUR: Back in 2019, Maserati revealed its plan of bringing out an electric GranTurismo along with an electric iteration of the GranCabrio convertible. Fast forward to today, the Italian automaker released the first teaser images of the next-gen GranTurismo EV prototype undergoing testing. While the model is heavily camouflaged, we can manage to spot a few changes. 

Starting with the front fascia, here we can see a more rounded grille in the middle and large intakes on the bumper. The new vertical headlights mimic the design of the ones available on the MC20 sports car. The automaker wrapped the C-pillar with camo, so it might be hiding a unique design. Also, no rear shot is provided at the moment, but we can think of a new bumper and new tail lights.

Just like design, Maserati only dropped a few clues about the upcoming GranTurismo features. It gives a hint about the inclusion of the Level 2 and Level 3 autonomous driving technology. The former will comprise highway assist, while the latter comes with hands-off driving with maneuvering in lanes. 

On the power front, the next-gen GranTurismo will be equipped with an electric drivetrain. The battery-electric setup is likely to get a three-motor system with one unit on the front and two at the back. Along with this, an internal combustion engine could also be on the cards. If one is offered, it will most likely be the new Nettuno 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 unit that debuted in the MC20. Under the bonnet of the sports car, the engine makes a maximum power of 630 PS and a peak torque of 730 Nm. The automaker may re-tune this for the redesigned coupe.

Expected to make a global debut later this year, the next-generation GranTurismo will be the automaker's first all-electric vehicle. Well, this is not the only Maserati car to get electric power, rather all Maserati upcoming cars will be electrified as the brand aims to electrify the whole lineup by 2025.
