Maserati showcased the Nettuno engine with F1 technology
KUALA LUMPUR: For nearly two decades, Maserati cars come equipped with Ferrari produced engines. But no more now, as the Italian sportscar marque introduces an all-new internal combustion engine named 'Nettuno,' developed entirely in-house. The new powerplant will be the beating heart of the upcoming MC20 super sportscar that will make its world premiere in September.
Weighing less than 220 kilograms, the 'futuristic' engine takes the shape of a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 unit, which uses dry-sump lubrication and innovative Formula 1-derived pre-chamber combustion system featuring twin-spark plugs.
In the forthcoming MC20 sportscar, the Nettuno V6 will generate 630 hp at 7,500 rpm and 730 Nm of torque between 3,000 and 5,500 rpm. This gives the Nettuno a specific output of around 210 hp per litre. The compression ratio is 11:1, and the bore is 88 mm, and the stroke is 82 mm
The combustion chamber is placed between the central electrode and the traditional combustion area and connected by a series of specially-designed holes. A conventional sparkplug acts as a support to ensure constant combustion. The direct and indirect twin injection system is linked to the fuel supply pressure at 350 bar, which reduces noise down on the rev range, lowers emissions and improves fuel consumption.
As a technical revolution, the project was born from the commitment and passion of highly-qualified Maserati technicians and engineers. It was designed in several Maserati facilities in Modena, beginning from Innovation Lab on Via Emilia Ovest, moving to the workshops on Via Delle Nazioni, and finally arriving at its final destination at the Engine Hub in Viale Ciro Menotti where it will be built. The automaker is currently prepping its production line as well as the paint shop for the new MC20.
The Modena-based marque has taken all the necessary steps to safeguard its new technology, including international patents. With the plans of returning to the world of racing, Maserati would showcase the new MC20 super sportscar with a made-in-Modena Nettuno engine at the MMXX event starting on September 9, 2020.
