Maserati MC12 successor is here, the MC20
KUALA LUMPUR: Finally, after all the spy shots, teasers, and leaked images, Maserati has revealed the MC20 to the world. Now before we begin dissecting every aspect of this latest supercar, here are a few basic things -
- The MC20 is fully developed in-house by the company in Modena
- It is powered by the Nettuno engine that marks Maserati's return in building its very own power unit after 20-years
MC stands for Maserati Corse, and 20 symbolises the current year 2020 - It took Maserati 24 months to design the MC20 and the company employed complex computers, fluid dynamics simulations, and wind tunnel testing, in the process
Maserati MC20 Dimensions
Compared to the MC12, the MC20 is a much smaller car. It measures 4,669 mm in length, 1,965 mm in width, and 1,221 mm in height. The wheelbase stretches to 2,700 mm.
Maserati MC20 Design
As per Maserati, the guiding force behind MC20's design was its historical identity, MC12. The pointed nose and vented bonnet prove the point. Apart from that, the rest of the car design is unique and as per the current taste. Prominent features on the outside include - vertical-style headlamps, air extractors, butterfly doors with flush door handles, glass engine cover, slim taillight with distinctive light signatures, and high-mounted dual exhausts.
The final design of the MC20 boasts a drag coefficient of 0.38, which works to its advantage. Its chassis is developed in partnership with Dallara and is designed to support both coupe and convertible versions of the supercar.
Maserati MC20 exterior colour options - Grigio Mistero, Bianco Audace, Rosso Vincente, Giallo Genio, Nero Enigma, and Blu Infinito.
Maserati MC20 Interior
Like all the other Maserati cars, the MC20 is also a driver-centric model. Speaking of which there are two air vents directed towards the driver, and the carbon-fiber steering wheel is not stuffed with buttons with just controls for launch, cruise control, engine start/stop, and media.
Further, the driver gets a 10-inch digital instrument cluster providing all the vital information. On the dashboard is present another 10-inch touchscreen that helps control several functions, and it is also linked to the Maserati Touch Control Plus system with MTC Plus MIA that handles everything from climate functions to making calls.
For added convenience, there is a wireless smartphone charger along with a bunch of connected services.
Maserati MC20 Nettuno Engine
Prior to the Nettuno, Ferrari used to supply engines to Maserati. This time the company didn't renew its engine supply deal with Ferrari and built its very own powerplant. The result, a mid-mounted 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 mill making 630 PS at 7,500 rpm and 730 Nm at 3,000 rpm. The output matches with the MC12's 6.0-litre naturally-aspirated V12 in terms of power, the torque is higher (652 Nm).
The power is transmitted to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission that works through a self-locking mechanical differential and a limited-slip.
Maserati has employed several high-tech features in the engine that makes it so powerful, like -
- Pre-chamber combustion system with twin-spark plugs
- Secondary lateral spark plug
- Twin-injection fuel system
- 90-degree V architecture
- 11:1 compression ratio
- Dry sump system
All this and more help the MC20 hit the 100 kmph mark in under 2.9 seconds, while the 200 kmph sprint takes it less than 8.8 seconds. Maserati's latest supercar can hit a top speed of over 325 kmph. The company also specified a braking distance of less than 33 meters when decelerating from 100 kmph.
Speaking of braking, it features 380 mm front discs clamped on by six-piston Brembo calipers and 350 mm rear discs with four-piston units.
