The Bao 5 is based on BYD’s DMO Platform, which comprises an advanced chassis, a specialised hybrid architecture, a four-wheel drive system, and off-road modes. The said platform achieves “exceptional system power while saving 35% in fuel compared to gasoline vehicles,” claims the automaker.
The plug-hybrid engine combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline mill and dual motors (one on each axle), generating a total system out of 687 PS and a peak torque of 760 Nm. The power is sent to all four wheels via an E-CVT gearbox, enabling the SUV to run from a standstill to 100 kmph in just 4.8 seconds.
The kit also includes a 31.8-kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which offers an all-electric range of 125 km (on the CLTC cycle).
Dimensionally, the BYD Bao 5 is 4,890 mm long, 1,970 mm wide, and 1,920 mm tall, and spans a wheelbase of 2,800 mm. It boasts an impressive ground clearance of 310 mm, along with approach and departure angles of 35° and 32°, respectively.
Features like a water-wading system, a rear differential lock, and BYD's DiSus-P Hydraulic Body Control System further enhance its off-roading capabilities.
The exterior design of the SUV looks rugged and reminiscent of iconic SUVs like the Toyota FJ Cruiser and Land Cruiser Prado. Inside, it is tech-rich with three screens - a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch passenger-side touchscreen, and a large 15.6-inch central touchscreen.
