Locally-assembled Kia Carnival coming soon, here’s what to expect
It was at the beginning of the year that Kia Malaysia launched the all-new 2022 Kia Carnival. However, back then the 11-seater Kia arrived as a fully-imported unit and was priced at RM196,341 (on-the-road, inclusive of the 50% SST rebate). Now we are hearing news of the soon arrival of the MPVs CKD version.
One of Kia’s dealers has announced the opening of booking for the locally-assembled Carnival via a Facebook post. The accompanying flyer provides information about the CKD unit’s price, though estimated, the figures are higher than the one for the fully-imported version.

While the ongoing CBU Kia Carnival retails for RM 196k, the upcoming CKD version is estimated to cost around RM 235K to 260K. The reason for such a hike we think is the improved cabin layout and equipment setup.
Let us explore the upcoming locally-assembled Kia Carnival in detail -
Engine: Though not confirmed, the locally-assembled Carnival will most probably be powered by the same unit as the CBU unit. So, a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel mill with a cast iron block (not aluminium) generates a maximum power output of 202 PS at 3,800 rpm along with a peak torque of 441 Nm from 1,750 to 2,750 rpm.
Transmission: With the engine being the same, we expect the gearbox to be the same as well. So, 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
Seating configuration: The fully-imported Kia Carnival arrived as an 11-seater MPV, however, things are about to differ this time around. As Kia Malaysia will bring the locally-assembled Carnival in seven- and eight-seat configurations. Thus, proving that it pays heed to customer feedback. The new, less compromised seating layout assures a more released cabin space with more legroom. However, unline the 11-seater version, this one will not enjoy commercial vehicle tax benefits.
Equipment: The locally-assembled Carnival will benefit from all the features that the fully-imported version enjoys. The plus here is the few additional features that are sorely missing from the CBU unit. For example, the 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a few driver assistance feature like autonomous emergency braking. Other features that will accompany are -
- Quad LED projector headlights
- Distinctive LED daytime running lights
- Full-width bulb taillights
- 18-inch Y-spoke two-tone alloy wheels
- Dual-zone automatic climate control (for front occupants) & single-zone controls (for second & third row)
- Manually-retractable sun shade
- Two 12-volt sockets & around seven USB ports
- Keyless entry
- Push-button start
- 8-way power-adjustable front seats
- Saddle brown faux leather upholstery
- Qi wireless charger
- Six speakers
- 360-degree camera system
- Hands-free powered sliding doors & tailgate
Safety: The locally-assembled Carnival will share the same safety specs as the fully-imported version. The list includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, seven airbags, stability control, ABS, EBD, BA, electronic stability control, traction control system, multi-collision brake control, hill-start assist control, auto door lock, and rear occupant alert.
The locally-assembled Carnival will be pricier than the fully-imported version, therefore we expect it to bring along quite a few worthy add-ons. What do you think Kia should add to the 2022 Carnival specs sheet? Let us know in the comments.
