Lexus NX Rides on Ice Wheels
Kuala Lumpur: By 'driving on ice' you may mean driving a car on ice clad mountains or roads, but Lexus took this quote very seriously. This Japanese automaker anchored its Lexus NX to wheels that are completely made from ice. Sounds cool (literally !!!) When it comes to publicity stunts, Lexus always comes up with new ideas which other automakers can only think of. Recently, Lexus also conducted a golf championship named Lexus Cup 2015.
Talking about the ice wheels, a team of four craftsmen were appointed and took them 36 hours to complete the work. This team came from Hamilton Ice Sculptors which is a London based company. The sculptors replicated the alloy wheels of Lexus NX with much precision by laser scanning them and getting a computerised design. Japanese steel chisels and shaping tools were used to give it a perfect finish. Even the patterns of tires were replicated just like real tires. Further, the ice wheels were fitted with clear acrylic discs and a blue LED light was also integrated to make it glow.
Next, the NX crossover was frozen at -30° C continuously for five days and was then fitted with these ice wheels. After this, the car was taken off to London roads for a ride. You must we wondering, how these ice wheels could have taken the load of such a heavy car. So, the Acrylic inserts acted as saviours by ensuring to handle the load of Lexus NX.
