Lamborghini to unveil two V12 powered models this year

KUALA LUMPUR: Lamborghini ended 2020 on a high note with the reveal of the Huracan STO track-focused supercar and now it seems geared up for 2021 too. The Italian automaker recently announced two new V12-powered supercars for this year, without disclosing any further information. “This year, the Huracan STO will be joined by two further new products, based on the iconic V12,” the official statement reads.

However, in an interview with Autocar UK, Lamborghini's boss Stephen Winkelmann stated that one of the upcoming models will get the mind-blowing supercapacitor system featured on the Sian FKP 37 hypercar.

Out of the two upcoming Lamborghini models, one is likely to be the next generation of the brand’s flagship supercar Aventador as its replacement is long overdue. Although the company rolled out an updated Aventador S in 2017, the original supercar on which it is based is now ten years old. The arrival of a new version coinciding with the tenth anniversary makes sense. Further supporting the idea are the spy shots of the Aventador prototype that were published online last year.

There are also rumors that the brand plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Countach prototype unveiled at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show with the launch of a special edition of the Aventador, which may be limited to a few units globally. Another model could be an Aventador-based hybrid supercar similar to the limited-production Sian. Well, whatever the automaker has up its sleeves, one thing is certain that it will be exciting.

Ahead of this news, Lamborghini also revealed its 2020 sales numbers. Despite the COVID-19 issues, the brand recorded the second-highest sales figure in its history with 7,430 cars sold worldwide and a turnover of £1.38 billion (RM 7.91 billion). The US remained the top-selling market with 2,224 cars ahead of Germany that grabbed 607 Lamborghini cars. These are followed by China, Hong Kong, and Macau with 604 and Japan with 600 units.

Winkelmann said: “2021 opened with a very positive outlook: deliveries in the first two months of this year have already surpassed those of the previous pre-pandemic period, and the orders placed thus far already cover nine months of production.”
