Japan gets the new Subaru WRX, details revealed

KUALA LUMPUR: Japan may not be the most favorable market for sedans, however, Subaru continues to offer the WRX in its home country. And now the automaker has launched the new WRX, after premiering the model in the US, early September.

In Japan, Subaru is offering the new WRX in two variants - entry-level WRX GT and range-topping WRX STI Sport R. The former is available for JPY 4,004,000 (around RM 149k), the latter retails for JPY 4,389,000 (approx. RM 163k). For a little extra, i.e., JPY 385,000, customers can avail of the extended advanced driver assistance system called the Eyesight X Technology.

What powers the new Subaru WRX sedan?

The all-new WRX is powered by the brand's latest 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer mill making a maximum power of 275 hp at 5,600 rpm along with a peak torque of 375 Nm.

The drive is sent to the all-four wheels equally via Subaru's signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System and CVT automatic unit, called Subaru Performance Transmission which offers intuitive shift logic and eight virtual ratios.

New Subaru WRX exterior and interior bits include -

• Pink STI emblem on the front grille and boot lid
•  STI Sport R moniker
• Two-tone wheels
• Electronically-controlled chassis via four drive modes
• Individual mode profiles with ZF electronic adaptive dampers

• STI emblem on the front headrest, instrument panel, and steering wheel
• Standard six speakers without an audio head unit system
• Massive 11.6-inch touchscreen central infotainment display
• Full-size 12.3-inch high-resolution unit

Subaru is offering convenience features worth JPY 275,000 along with gorgeous Black-and-Bordeaux seats as an option in the STI Sport R model.

On the safety front, all WRX variants come equipped with an advanced driver-assist system called EyeSight Core Technology. The suite includes Pre-Crash Brake, preceding vehicle start notification, adaptive cruise control, and lane & blind spot assist assistance.

That's not all, as the new sedan benefits from EyeSight X Technology that includes - Active lane change assist, Hands-off & Start Assist during traffic jams, Driver Monitoring System, Driver Error Response System, and Speed control at all toll booths and curves.

Overall, the new Subaru WRX is a capable sedan hitting all the right notes for the driver and passengers.
