However, unlike its fully electric sibling set for production in 2025 and slated for eventual release in in selected markets, the mild-hybrid model remains in the study phase without a confirmed production timeline.
Isuzu describes the D-Max Hi-Lander MHEV as a prototype designed to offer an alternative for customers interested in reducing their carbon footprint. The company is currently gauging market interest before finalizing its sales strategy.
The heart of the mild-hybrid D-Max is a 1.9-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, complemented by an electric motor powered by a 48-volt battery. This setup aids in vehicle start-up and enhances performance at lower speeds. While specific performance metrics remain under wraps, it's anticipated that the hybrid system will maintain the diesel engine's output of 150PS and 350Nm without significant deviation.
This move places Isuzu in direct competition with the Toyota Hilux, which recently introduced a mild-hybrid system of its own. The Hilux's 'V-Active Technology', similar to Isuzu's, employs a 48-volt system alongside a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine but does not expect an increase in its 204PS and 500Nm performance.
Isuzu has yet to reveal whether it will experiment with a mild-hybrid setup for its more popular 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, which delivers 190PS and 450Nm.
