In-house operating system for next-gen Volvo cars
KUALA LUMPUR: Yes, you read it just right. The next-generation Volvo vehicles will come fitted with in-house manufactures operating system, VolvoCars.OS.
Benefit of having one’s very own OS?
Well, surely there are several peaks of using an in-house system over the outsourced one’s. For instance, the new VolvoCars.OS will work as an umbrella system for all the company’s EVs. It will further be turned with automaker’s several operating systems across the cloud and car, thus creating one coherent software OS environment.
Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer at Volvo said, “By developing software in-house we can boost development speeds and improve your Volvo faster than we can today.” He further added, “Just like on your smartphone or computer, new software and features can be rolled out swiftly through over-the-air (OTA) updates, making your Volvo better and even more enjoyable over time.”
Key highlights of the VolvoCars.OS has on offer -
- Volvo’s underlying operating system includes Linux, Android Automotive OS, AUTOSAR, and QNX operating systems
- It gives developers access to in-car features like cloud-based features, user interfaces, vehicle sensor data
- Enables developers to create new applications and services for the Volvo vehicles
- It will operate a core computing system in the vehicle, this it will do with via the in-house development software, NVIDIA
Interesting fact, Volvo was the first automaker to team up with Google to provide its cars with an infotainment system powered by Android with built-in Google apps and services. And the fully-electric XC40 was the first car to benefit from such an integrated infotainment system.
As for its upcoming cars such as the all-new XC90, Volvo Cars and Google have come together to create a simple, centralised touch screen with easy to use interface and responsive interaction. Seamless smartphone connection will take priority with the device acting as a key to the EV and its ecosystem.
Furthermore, the next-gen Volvo cars will be turned with features like -
- Finding & paying for charging
- Home device connectivity
- Popular remote features like pre-heating & -cooling
