Hyundai Kona Electric teaser released, launch this year
KUALA LUMPUR: After launching the all-new luxury Staria MPV in Malaysia, Hyundai is now geared up for the launch of the fully-electric Kona. Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors drops the first official teaser for the battery-powered crossover on its Facebook handle with the caption “Prepare to be electrified.” It is set to be released by the end of this year.

The Hyundai Kona Electric comes with two battery sizes - 39.2-kWh and 64-kWh, offering a range of 405 km and 484 km, respectively.Prior to this, the fully-undisguised EV was spied at Petronas Ara Damansara and also in the product video of the Staria.
While the details on the Malaysian-spec Kona Electric are not available as of now, it comes with two battery sizes in other markets. These include a 39.2-kWh battery pack delivering a maximum power output of 135 PS and a peak torque of 395 Nm. It offers an all-electric driving range of 405 km. On the performance front, it runs from zero to 100 kmph in 9.9 seconds before attaining a top speed of 155 kmph.
The more powerful trim is fitted with a 64-kWh pack generating 204 PS and 395 Nm of torque and has a cruising range of 484 km. Performance numbers include a century sprint of 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 167 kmph.
Speaking about the charging time, the smaller battery takes six hours for a full charge with a 7.2 kW AC charger, while the bigger charges in nine hours. A 50 kW DC charger reduces the 0-80% charging time to 48 mins and 64 mins, respectively.
In terms of features, the fully-imported Hyundai Kona Electric is expected to have an advanced instrument panel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen head unit, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, and advanced driver-assistance systems like forward collision warning, lane follow assist, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, highway driver assist and more.
About the Hyundai Kona Electric price in Malaysia, no indicative figures are available at the moment. However, we know that its price will not include taxes and duties as per the recently announced EV policy in Budget 2022.
